Remote Control Helicopters
Remote control (RC) helicopters are amazingly good fun toys for (well supervised) kids and adults alike. RC Helicopters come in a variety of sizes for a variety of purposes – mini electronic ones for use inside the home or in small gardens, all the way up to large, petrol powered replica helicopters that can fly to surprising heights.
Hobbyists often prefer RC helicopters because they don’t involve any messy gluing or sanding or construction. The parts are all precisely machined metal or plastic, and fit together snugly with nuts and bolts.
They usually come as a set with the helicopter itself, and a remote control used to direct it. You’ll need to get to grips with the controller first before you even think about flying it around – they can often be quite tricky!
Controls usually include one for the speed and power of the main rotors, which basically controls whether the helicopter moves up or down, as well as controls for the tail rotor, which is what stops the helicopter from spinning out of control. Depending on the complexity of the model, there are sometimes further controls for more accurate control over the helicopter.
RC Helicopters can do a number of tricks that many other RC vehicles can’t, including hovering, flying backwards, looping in the same spot, and loads more. Some people can even control them well enough to make their ‘copter hover upside down!
There’s no denying that learning to fly a RC helicopter can be a daunting task, and it is said that they have one of the steepest learning curves out there. Don’t worry though, there is always plenty of support out there, from other local hobbyists to the store where you bought the helicopter – make sure you get plenty of advice from them. RC helicopters make great novelty gifts for gadget fans too.
