Late for lunch? Telenav’s OnMyWay for iPhone lets your party know

August 26th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

You’re a pretty punctual person, right? Right. But sometimes stuff just happens, you know? Maybe you forgot your wallet and had to go back. Maybe you couldn’t find your keys. Maybe you had to bust through the front windshield of a flipped-over bus to save the orphans inside.

Whatever the totally-legitimate-and-not-at-all-made-up reason is, Telenav’s OnMyWay for iPhone will automatically let your party know you’re running a bit late, and when they should expect you.

The app isn’t completely automatic, of course; you’ve gotta have the foresight to schedule the event and set up the contacts before you start driving — and if you’ve got that much foresight, you’ve probably got the foresight to leave a bit early, right? Sure. But again: busses full of orphans. They happen.

The app’s free, so it’s worth checking out. We had a few issues getting it to start up after we first installed it, but a quick power cycle fixed that right up. Give it a look, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

iPhone Dev Team won’t be jailbreaking iOS 4.0.2, says “the only winning move is not to play”

August 26th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

In the endless game of cat-and-mouse that is iPhone jailbreaking, sometimes the mouse needs to take a break. Not because it’s tired, mind you — but because it doesn’t want to show the cat where it’s hiding its cheese before it gets a chance to eat it.

Early this morning, the iPhone Dev Team (the guys behind the discovery of the vast majority of iPhone jailbreak methods) announced that they won’t be working on a jailbreak for iOS 4.0.2.

Why? Because with iOS 4.0.2, Apple showed that they’re willing to push out updates that do nothing but patch the exploits used for jailbreaking. It’s by all means reasonable, especially in this case; the browser-based (and thus easily forced on unknowing users) exploit patched in 4.0.2 could be used for all sorts of nasty things beyond jailbreaking, so Apple had plenty of reasons to drop everything and patch it up.

For the dev-team to respond with a jailbreak for 4.0.2 (which, again, is featureless outside of the exploit fix) would be to throw perfectly good jailbreak methods to the wind. Apple would patch’em by the time 4.1 rolled out to everyone, and then 4.1 would be that much harder to break into.

As the dev-team puts it: for the time being, at least, “the only winning move is not to play“.

LG E900 “Optimus 7″ Handset With Windows Phone 7 Leaked

August 25th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

Another WP7 handset has been leaked — on top of the C900 , Panther, and Cetus handsets in the last week. It’s raining Windows Phone 7 up in here. The E900, which will be sold as the Optimus 7, looks to be a straightforward slate-style handset, lacking the slide-out keyboard of the C900.

The picture is an “official” leak, made on Twitter by Microsoft Netherlands. Nothing more than a headshot at this point, though.

August 25th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

You’ve got your camping gear packed, and a full night’s supply of coffee prepped. You’re all ready to camp out on the sidewalk for what may very well be the first Windows Phone 7-powered phone in the US: the LG C900 for AT&T.

There’s only one problem: you don’t know when to show up. Now we might!

The eagle eyes over at PhoneArena were digging around the C900′s Bluetooth Certification page and found this little gem:

The supporting features related to BT of this models are like bellows; – RF : 2.1 + EDR – Profile : HSP, HFP, A2DP, AVRCP, PBAP This model will be available on Market around 2010-09-28 .

September 28th, you say? Why, that’s only a little over a month away. We’ll have to see just how far they plan to stretch the definition of “around” in “around 2010-09-28″ — but either way, Windows Phone 7 is coming soon.

HTC T8788 packs Windows Phone 7 and a hidden speaker

August 24th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

Contrary to what thoughts the name may invoke, the T8788 is not a Terminator. That is, unless Skynet ever made a Windows Phone 7-powered Terminator whose sole purpose was to pump tunes out of a hidden slide-out speaker — which, while cool, doesn’t really seem like a good fit for them.

Engadget managed to dig up the shot above, which shows what’s sure to be the T8788′s most touted feature. See it? That slide out bit? That’s no keyboard — that’s a slide-out speaker. Combine that with the kickstand on the back, and we may very well be lookin’ at the first media-focused WinPho7 handset.

Though there’s no carrier branding in view on this unit, their sources promise’m this ones headed for AT&T. Along with the LG C900 and the Samsung Cetus, that’s at least three WinPho7 handsets destined for AT&T; looks like they’re really trying to get a lock on this OS early.

Virgin Mobile shifts up their MiFi plan: $40. Unlimited. Contract-free. Glorious.

August 24th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

Man, these pre-paid carriers are really learning to pull on a geek’s heartstrings. Just months ago, Boost launched the US’ first Android-powered prepaid phone, the Moto i1. Now, Virgin Mobile is offering up what may very well be the best mobile broadband plan around.

This morning Virgin Mobile is launching a $40-bucks-for-30-days Unlimited Mobile Broadband/MiFi plan, whilst simultaneously doing away with their old tiered $20/$40/$60 data packages. If you don’t use nearly enough data to warrant anything labeled as “unlimited”, they’re still offering a $10 plan that gets you up to 100 megabytes of access for 10 days.

If there’s a better deal on mobile broadband out there, I don’t know of it.

Purportedly legitimate Nokia N9 specs trickle out

August 23rd, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

Nokia’s recently leaked, oh-so-MacBook-Pro-esque N9 may not have the most original look ever… but these days, what does? We’ll give this thing a free pass through the Valley of Snark for the fact that it’s probably going to be one of this first handsets to hit the shelves rockin’ Nokia/Intel’s new operating system, MeeGo — something which we’re damned excited to tinker with.

We know what it’ll look like, and we know the operating system.. but what’s inside?

A user over at Chinese forum Baidu has leaked a list of what they promise are the real-deal N9 innards. It all sounds perfectly reasonable for a new flagship handset’s debut into the world of increasingly ridiculous specs, with the one stand-out element being the 64GB hard drive (solid state, presumably) supposedly tucked inside.

The specs:

  • 4″ OLED display (800×480)
  • 1 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU
  • 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB of System-only storage
  • 720p video recording
  • HSPA+
  • 64GB hard drive
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi
  • Bluetooth 2.0

Think they’ll pan out? Let us know in the comments below.

How Technology Has Changed The Modern World

August 23rd, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews

In this era of technology there are many gadgets that have changed the way we live our lives, from smart phones, to the latest in computers and desktop software. Not only are these gadgets live changing but they have proven to be vital to companies, as where would we be now without the Internet? Many companies certainly wouldn’t be trading, and giants such as Google may not be in the position they are in today without it. Companies that rely on the Internet that base their projects primarily online such as affiliate marketing will also be non-existent.

In today’s world mobile phones are being used more and more for surfing the Internet and in the past few years’ web developers are changing their design strategies to accompany mobile devices. As many people using iPhone’s and Blackberry’s are searching the Internet on their phones, whilst on the move, websites must be able to be displayed correctly on these devices, and even if you wanted to recycle mobile phones, you could sell the phone you are using and find a price instantly as the website correctly identifies your phone and then displays a price that you could sell it for.

In a time where mobile phone recycling is advancing at a fast pace, now you can use your mobile phone to sell your old mobile online without hassle.

Leading recyclers and comparison sites have this option available, and if they haven’t the option will be there over the course of the next year.

Details of the Motorola MB520 “Kobe” leak

August 22nd, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Cell Phone Reviews, Phone News

Soon there’ll be a new Android phone in AT&T Town. A phone goin’ by the name of Kobe. Moto Kobe.

Details have leaked of the device from both the UPnP Forum, and the Wi-Fi Alliance, but today, Engadget got some insider knowledge on the matter, including a couple of benchmark screenshots, and a run down of the specs.

The device will be a slate form-factor running a Droid 2/X style Motoblur UI, on a 3.5″ 480 x 854 LCD screen.

Under the hood will be a 800MHz TI OMAP processor (Engadget say either a 3440 or an underclocked 3630), PowerVR SGX 530 GPU, 512MB RAM, 2GB internal storage with a bundled 2GB microSD card, and a 3 megapixel camera (without flash).

A 3 megapixel camera seems peculiar in this day and age, but I know I’d take a good quality 3MP camera over some of the 5MP phone cameras I’ve used (*cough* HTC Hero *cough*), but, judging by the lack of a flash, the use of a 3MP sensor is first and foremost a cost consideration, rather than an attempt at quality over quantity.

Engadget’s source also says that it is heading to AT&T, and will come loaded with Swype, Vlingo, and DNLA support, but — sadly — there are no other details right now.

As usual, we’ll be here to let you know such matters as they emerge.

In the mean time, if you’re interested in the benchmark results, hit up the source link to view the gallery.
