Start at Home to Begin a New Career in Music

Hope you have been practicing singing in the past week and your vocal chords are now prepared to take on the nuances of getting on with the real thing- the actual recording.

Moving on from where we left off the last time around – here are the rest of the gadgets you will need to set up your very own recording studio.

Gadget 2 – Your Microphone:

While your standard microphone may be adequate to chat with your long distance friend, you may require something more technical for your recording needs. You’ll need one that will record your music perfectly. Microphones are the most important feature in recording your music because their quality varies widely and they are what you hear.

There is a wide range of microphones available such as condensers, dynamics, tubes and many more .It has been observed that live mics are not always great for the studio. Generally, wide diagram condensers are what you want for vocals. That again you have to decide seeing your pocket. Remember that if you are going to record in groups, or different types of instruments, you’ll require more than one microphone.

Another negative for using computer microphones is the connectivity issue. Many microphones have a balanced output cable. You are likely to be on the right lines if your sound card or audio interface has the corresponding input slot. If not, you will have to go in for an alternative like running it through a mixer or a pre-amp. Another possibility is to acquire a pair of good dynamic microphones that use an unbalanced jack which you can insert to get the desired output. You could also get an adapter for your sound card. As far as recording into digital multitracks is concerned, it should not be a problem as they are usually made for all microphones.

Gadget 3 – Audio Interface Recording Sound Card:

Much as we have seemingly maligned the computer, it is still required even if you’ll be recording externally as you’ll still need to get the sound into the computer for audio mastering, burning, MP3 upload or whatever else. If you want to get it in a high quality, some of the factors to look for are types of input, quality and connectivity.

The advantage of using a digital multitrack as compared to a purely analog one is that it doesn’t lose music recording quality when copied to another device. Your digital multitrack can send it’s music out digitally, so its better to have a sound card that can accept digital data as well. The standard formats are called “spdif”, and come in two categories, requiring two different types of cables: optical (spdif/o) and electronic (spdif/e).

Gadget 4 – Studio Headphones, Playback Gear:

As you will be playing the new vocals with the backing tracks you have to make sure your backing tracks are synchronized to the device you will be recording your vocals to.

A computer program generally does this automatically. If, however, you are using a multitrack with a computer, your synchronization may need to be tweaked a wee little bit. While doing your home recording, all you will be required to do is connect the computer and multitrack via a MIDI cable and then specifying on each (the program and the multitrack) which sync signal (MMC, MTC, SMPTE) is sent/received. Besides, you also need to check the frame rate, which device is the master and whether pressing ‘Play’ on the master starts playback at the beginning or at the song position of the master.

Use the tips of this article to have a wonderful recording experience. Soon your name will figure amongst the successful singers.

Indestructible map is indestructible

Maps are among the more invaluable travel tools. Android/iPhone apps are nice, but sometimes analog is just the best way to go. Industrial designer Emanuele Pizzolorusso has these Tyvek city maps in the pipes that look like they can handle anything you throw at them.

These maps are waterproof, crease-able, crumble-able, and when you’re done reading one, just stuff it haphazardly into the included ouch. They’re probably more useful to a hitchhiker than his or her towel. Emergency blanket, tarp, hull patch, the uses are endless. I only see concepts for London, Paris, New York, Tokyo and Berlin, and no word on when we can expect to find them in the wild.

GameStop selling 250GB Xbox 360 drive

Well lookie at that, GameStop is selling a 250GB Xbox 360 drive separately from a console. Microsoft has said in the past that they don’t plan on selling the larger drives without a bundle, so I doubt these are a new or official product, but rather GameStop coming up with something on their own.

The listing for the drive popped up on GameStop’s website for $129.99, but the product isn’t available until 3/23. There’s also not a whole lot of details about rather it’s new, used, or whatever. So either someone accidentally leaked some info a bit early, or GameStop finally figured out what to do with all those hard drives they’ve been taking in trade in on the Elite consoles. My guess is the latter, but only time will tell. It does fit their business model, selling the used drives separate from the console sounds very much like something that they would do.

Windows Vista

March 2nd, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Gadget Reviews

The latest operating system to be released by the Microsoft Corporation in their Windows line is Windows Vista.  This new operating system has been hailed as the next great wave of operating systems with new, improved features and a user interface like no other.  What can you expect to see new in Windows Vista?

Most significant in Windows Vista is the way it looks.  It has brighter colors, more graphics, and capabilities for keeping multiple windows open on the same screen.  Think of it as a computer version of picture in picture.  This is referred to as Windows Aero and is a completely new graphical user interface.

Here are some other highlights you can find with Windows Vista:
* Basic file backup and restore.
* Improved DVD support with the ability to easily create custom DVD movies.
* Easy transfer, a feature that allows you to easily transfer files from an older computer to the new computer.
* File encryption.
* Instant search available through all Explorer windows.
* Support for DirectX 10.
* Self-healing, the ability to automatically detect and correct problems that may be encountered on the computer.
* Shadow copy, a feature that allows you to recover deleted files.
* Improved photo gallery and control of photographs.
* Windows Sidebar and gadgets that allows you to add an almost endless list of different gadgets.
* More parental control.
* Improved Windows Calendar, with the ability to set tasks and appointments.

As was the case with other releases of Windows, the new Windows Vista is not without its critics.  The biggest complaint among users of this operating system is that its system requirements are so high that you need a very large memory just to install the software.  It takes up so much room on the hard driver, the computer runs slower.

Even though Windows Vista is flashier and looks prettier, many people have trouble adapting to the new features.  It’s sometimes difficult to change over to something you’re not used to.  With everything that’s new in Windows Vista, it can be overwhelming, but this is where you take it slow and explore your new operating system.

Most of the problems and bugs in Windows Vista simply require a workaround or a change in the way you use it.  Overall, Windows Vista has been hailed as a great new product ushering in a new era in computer technology.  The choice has to be up to you whether or not you want to upgrade, but if you do, we’re relatively sure you’re in for a wonderful experience.
